Thanksgiving Rotation

Alright, siblings. This post is for you. As we all know, Thanksgiving is at Mom and Dad's this year. Our problem is that Dastrups are also having Thanksgiving at their side this year, and all of Brigham's Utah siblings are there this year and then rotating to their other sides next year. Obviously that isn't good news for us. As it is now, no matter what we make one side of the family unhappy. Brigham's brother's family is pretty much locked into their rotation because his wife's parents go to Vegas every other year when it is not their turn (i.e. this year). So my question to you, my dear siblings, is this: are you guys already set in a rotation with your other side of the family? If you are set, I guess that maybe we'll have to do 2 years in a row with one family and then 2 years with the next so that one family isn't always getting shafted. But that's not ideal because that means we'd only have Thanksgiving with you all once every 4 years. Booooo! I'm still hoping that we can find a way to make everyone happy.

When I first married into the Nelson family they had a pretty set schedule of every other year (and following that same schedule it would be our turn to be there for thanksgiving). However, the Nelson family is getting big enough and spread out enough that their every other year every other holiday rotation isn't really happening anymore. So no, we are not locked in. I'm sure there will be random years where they do want to get everyone together, but it is no longer on a rotation.

As for making me unhappy, ANY holiday I don't have my family around makes me unhappy but Marilyn and I always had to split holidays too so I understand when we can't. We ended up MOSTLY having G&G Groneman for Christmas morning and having Thanksgiving with G&G Haslem. Dunno why...that's just the way things worked. However, we visited or were visited by both grandparents on both holidays. Bottom line is we'll enjoy you emensely when you come, and miss you when you don't but we'll live.

By the way, just the face you WANT to do holidays with us makes me smile and get all nostalgic thinking of the holidays of the past.

Where are the Brett and Chad Groneman inputs...? Are you there?

For me, what Kim says.

With 6 other kids in my family, we're pretty locked in at the moment... We had Thanksgiving with my parents last year, and then they'll be back from the mish next year, so I'm sure we'll all want to be there next year. So far, Brett has had to work most holidays, so sometimes we don't really spend the right holiday with the right family any way. I think he's working both the evening before Thanksgiving and on Thanksgiving Day this year (so... if you want to catch him, we'd have to have dinner around 4... or do whatever you were planning on doing and we'll show up around 4 and talk to who ever is there).

Since we live so close, and since we don't have a bunch of kids yet, I'm kind of planning on spending at least a few hours at both parent's houses for the big holidays. I also like to take into account if anyone from out of town is coming for the holiday... then I'm more likely to spend time on that side.

Welcome back to Utah where you have to make all these fun decisions.

The schedule we have right now works out pretty well for us -- we're able to see the most people in our current schedule (Thanksgiving at Gronemans this year, Christmas next year). We'll miss seeing you, but we understand.

We don't want to do the whole "visit everyone" thing on holidays. Not to say that we won't occasionally visit on an off-holiday, but we don't want to establish a pattern where that's expected. We want to be able to relax on the holidays, and not have to worry because we haven't seen the other side yet.

As families get bigger, we understand we won't be able to see everyone every time there is a party. We'll miss the people who aren't there, but hopefully we'll see them at the next party.

I can say that Christmas 2011 my sister comes home from her mission so my family would be all getting together then for sure.
