MOVIE REVIEW: Hotel Rwanda

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0395169/  This is one of those movies that is kind of disturbing to watch but everyone in the world SHOULD watch because this type of thing just keeps happening over and over at various places around the world and we shouldn't turn a blind eye.  Erica tells me that the subject of this movie,  Paul Rusesabagina, came and spoke at BYU a while back.  A very powerful  true-life story of a hotel manager who housed over 1200 Tutsi refugees during their struggle against the Hutu militia in Rwanda in 1994 when over a million people were slaughtered in genocide (and the news in the US barely touched on it at the time).

seen it. The crazy thing is that thing like that are currently happening. I saw a 20/20 episode about such things right now. The people they interviewed who fear for their lives have a sincere idea that "the Americans will save us". It was so sad because the americans are not coming!

Katie and I watched "Fiddler on the roof" the other night. I mentioned, I guess without really thinking, that it was sad that "back then" people could be that horrible to other people (referring to when they destroyed the wedding and kicked them out of their home town). It's horrible that it still happens. I honestly don't remember anything about this on the news in 1994. Of course, I was 11, and didn't care much for the news. I've seen Hotel Rwanda. I agree -- disturbing to watch, but I think important to understand the history of what ethnic intolerance and can lead to.
