Interesting. Breanna and I were discussing this very subject this last week.
Today in Relief Society class, we were discussing the last days. Our teacher had a bunch of the signs of the last days scattered on the board, and she asked us to organize them according to if it is something that has already happened, is happening now, or is yet to happen. There were a couple of women in the group that wanted to put "the moon turned to blood" and "the sun darkened"in the has happened already column. Several of us said naw! But one outspoken sister said that according to President Hinckley it has already happened...that right after 9/11 he spoke and said that it had been fulfilled. So of course I came home and looked up his first talk at general conference right after 9/11 to see for myself. So here it is:
The era in which we live is the fulness of times spoken of in the scriptures, when God has brought together all of the elements of previous dispensations. From the day that He and His Beloved Son manifested themselves to the boy Joseph, there has been a tremendous cascade of enlightenment poured out upon the world. The hearts of men have turned to their fathers in fulfillment of the words of Malachi. The vision of Joel has been fulfilled wherein he declared:
"And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
"And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
"And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
"The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come.
"And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call" (Joel 2:28–32).
One thing that was discussed in Gospel Doctrine today. The events of this past week, of the protests around the LA and SLC temples, along with the threats and anger against all the Mormons and Mormon church for standing in the way of Gay marriage being validated in California, when I saw the protests on TV, the Spirit told me that things were going to become worse in the future, and several people in our class voiced the same conviction. As evil continues to become more of a dominant force, and their numbers increase, persecution will pick up against the church and church members, as it has in the past. The promise is still there though, that "All of thy children shall be taught of the Lord and great shall be the peace of thy children"We also know that there will be a great winnowing, a separation of the Godly from the un Godly. It is certainly easy to see how it will happen, not only on Prop 8, but other issues that will certainly arise in the future. But we can have peace in troubled times. If we are following the prophet, we can still have peace, when the world rages about us, if we have our own testimony of the gospel and follow the prophet. If in the end, you know that your choices that you are making will take you to exaltation and Eternal Life, then what happens here, isn't really all that important. This life is so temporary, but so eternally consequential. You kids are going to have to be ever so diligent and precise in doing ALL that the brethren suggest to do to raise children in righteousness though. There will be no peace for anyone in your family if you lose your children to Satans influence. But I have no worries. You kids have testimonies, and are valiant. You are the chosen generation saved for this time because the Lord knew you were up to the task of raising your children in righteousness. But I know, it will take Deliberate and DILIGENT effort to succeed .
