Playhouse wallpaper border ????

Gang, Input please. Your mother wants to decorate the playhouse portion for little girls. She originally wanted THIS BORDER which I th0ught would scare away any boys from playing in there. We compromised and right now it stands at THIS BORDER (which I still think is too "babyish") Of course, if it were left up to me I'd get something like THIS ONE or THIS ONE. but I'm sure that's not too girl friendly. I do think something like THIS ONE is better all around.

What I'm worried about is getting something too boy/girl oriented and getting something to "childish" that would make it so 10 year olds (so grown up you know) wouldn't want to play in it. Give us your thoughts. If you could put any kind of wallpaper border in there which would it be? (Doesn't have to be one of the above). Remember this just goes in the lower "house" portion of the playhouse and not in the "fort" portion.

How about some plain pink (maybe with a lace design) for the girl's section? I think all of them are a bit on the "childish" side that would make it so the 10 year olds will see it as "for the little kids".

I'd agree with Chad. Something not Disney or character oriented would be best, I think.

So do you think the bottom portion of the playhouse should be strictly girl oriented? I was kind of thinking both portions should be unisex in general.

I think unisex is good. I think you ought to do something that looks grown-up. Kids love pretending that they are grown ups. That's hard to do when you've got Winnie the Pooh staring you down.

Neutral is a good option--no character decor. I agree w/ Christa. Kids will grow out of certain phases. I wouldn't do pink for downstairs though since the boys have to go through that room to get upstairs.

I'm glad we are all agreeing on this. I was thinking no characters at all too. Just make it look like a miniature house so put a neutral wallpaper in. I don't know if you remember the wallpaper that was in our upstairs hallway in AF but it had a shiney silvery pattern on it. I always wished that I had that pattern in my room because it was so special and shiney. Something like that is neutral but not too girly.

So, all you voters: Why is it that the blanket that was wanting to be taken to picnics or to the park with friends for fireworks was ALWAYS the "ABC" quilt when you were teenagers? It was the most little kid thing we had in the house! and it kept going on into college? I want this to be CUTE! How is it supposed to be cute with no cartoon-y characters and only neutral colors? BORING, is what that would make it!
Also, may I remind you, that the wallpaper boarder stuff is only going to cost $10.00 for the whole little house! I Can replace it in 10 years with something else!
New vote needed!

You can do whatever you want and I'm sure it will be great however it turns out, but I would still vote no characters.

I think the vote is unanimous... no characters. I don't know about everyone else, but the reason I always took the ABC blanket is cause you never let me take anything else so that was my only option left over. If you want something "cute" do butterflies or flowers or something but my vote is no characters.

Wow... what a controversy! I'd do something nerdy like a double helix. But if I was feeling unnerdy, I'd probably just one or two walls a bright color and not do wallpaper, but that's just me.

I agree with Buff-- that blanket was the only option! I still stick by what I said-- kids like to pretend to be grown-ups. They have characters everywhere else in their world. Katie's is a good idea-- paint works.

I never used the ABC blanket.

Do a neutral color thing. I think the boys will be climbing up the outside rather than going through, but it'll end up being the jail for some game of tag. Maybe we should get cold, gray stone wallpaper and make it look like a jail cell!

No, just do it neutral, no characters. My re-vote is that.

I disagree with the characters idea too. No offense intended. I think it can be "cuter" without it. There is a reason why it's only $10 for the whole thing. Tacky.

I like the colorful paint idea. Maybe even let them do hand-prints in paint on one wall... That would be fun!

As for the ABC blanket, I think we wanted it because we knew that everyone else wanted it... It had the feeling of "we know we're so much older than this ABC design blanket that it's laughable, and therefore acceptable. -- besides that, everyone else wants it, and therefore so do I."

I don't think that the wallpaper should be done.

Hand-prints of the kids in paint. Colorful. With their names. Amen.

My re-vote is no characters.

I agree with Brett on the reason we liked the ABC blanket (by the way-- I own it now and had a picnic on it 2 days ago).

I agree with Christa that kids like to pretend to be grown ups and that is why they would prefer it look like an actual miniature house. The solid color paint idea works, but I'd have to say I disagree on the handprint idea because grown-up houses don't have them. I remember loving the curtains in our playhouse because it made it seem like a real house.

This is feeling a bit too much like Iran's situation. WE NEED A RE-VOTE!!! JUSTICE FOR ALL!!!

What about this idea? What if we had 1 wall as a jail cell, one with handprints, one with winnie-the-pooh, one neutral. EVERYONE WINS and if they get tired of playing cops and robbers, they can go have honey together with Winnie-the-Pooh

On a more serious note, my older brother made a play room and framed a large area of the wall at kids' height. Inside the frame he painted it with blackboard paint and the kids could draw on it with chalk all they wanted. It was a real hit! For this playhouse it could be a good addition however or where ever you'd like to place it. Thanks for reading:)

That's a good idea, put the chalk on a designated place instead of the driveway - my Dad hates sidewalk chalk.

Sorry, Katie, the double helix is out. Brett, you may need to give her some support on this issue. Tell her to be brave!
OK, so here is the verdict. Wallpaper with characters is out. We like the idea of chalkboard paint, but we are going to put that in the fort, not the playhouse. I also like the idea of hand prints. We could have our grand kids, and well everyone, put their hand print on a wall dedicated to that purpose and sign it...and then do it again every 5 years. That would personalize it!

And I am also liking Katie's idea (just so you are not too traumatized Katie) of 2 walls with bold colors. We could do the hand prints over the top of one of them.

Remember the pale orange, green, and yellow strip that was in the hall bathroom before I replaced it? I still have the rugs and shower curtain. I could put them out there (made into drapes of course). Sounds like I would be tremendously out-voted to put a kid print on the windows! I could also just go buy new stuff and make drapes. I am nearly afraid to ask, but do you have feedback, people?

Man, you keep forcing me to think about decorating the inside before I'm even through with the outside! An alternative thought: Put a wainscoat and fancy moldings around the ceiling inside the house part to make it fancy? That wouldn't really fit well with loud colors etc. Just a thought.

I'm a fan of the blackboard in the fort. It'll be needed to plan raids on the girls' playhouse (from a convenient location, no less!).
Cambrienelson said…
If it were left up to me (and it obviously not) I'd do then handprints in the fort or on an outside wall somewhere. I still agree with Christa that it should be as home-like as possible in the playhouse. Solid bold colors works great for me. I have a miniature yellow rocking chair I could donate. It would be fun to have tons of differnt solid bold colors in there.
